Meet the Scientist

18th Jan 2024

We have engaged in two wonderful webinars this term.
On Wednesday 10th we met a psychologist, Dr. Brian Slattery, who talked about his work as a lecturer, researcher and entrepreneur in behavioural science.
On Wednesday 17th we met a mathematician, Dr. Rachel Quinlan, who talked about her work as a Mathematician. She outlined what she considered to be the most extraordinary everyday things - water, cubes and paper - because of their properties.
Paper is foldable, holds its fold, is translucent and resilient and therefore it has great mechanical properties for engineering. The children got the opportunity to learn how to make regular pentagons from a strip of paper.
She also spoke about Miura, a Japanese astrophysicist, inventor and origamist, particularly known for the Miura fold.
